Zwischen Tradition und Experiment: Böckchen, Buchmarkt und Bananen

Reisen ins fette B sind für (zugereiste) Münchnerinnen immer ein Abenteuer – und das ganz besonders, wenn dort ein illustres Trüppchen Norwegerinnen und Norweger auf einen wartet: In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Norwegischen Kinderbuchinstitut, der Kgl. Norwegischen Botschaft und NORLA luden wir anlässlich des norwegischen Gastlandauftritts auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse zum Startschussevent ins Felleshus der Nordischen Botschaften in Berlin ein. Zunächst stand ein ebenso unterhaltsames wie informatives Gespräch der beiden Bildkünstler Stian Hole (u.a. „Garmans Sommer“) und Gry Moursund („Die Böckchen-Bande“) auf dem Plan.

IYL goes China…

From 4^th until 7^th July 2017 the author of this paper was invited by the Goethe-Institute China and the Chinese Library Association to present literary educational concepts and reading projects of the International Youth Library in various libraries in Ordos, Beijing and Lanzhou, and to strike up a conversation with Chinese librarians and literary educators.
The first lesson of the trip was: sometimes things turn out differently. Due to terrible tempests, the plane from Beijing to Ordos could not land and had to return to Beijing. And just look: An airplane full of Chinese passengers kept „Confucian“ serenity as I imagined how the scenario in Germany would probably have run out. After all flights towards Inner Mongolia were canceled, it was clear that we had to stay in Beijing. So I found the time to explore some of the capital’s libraries on my own.

Zum 30. Mal fand in diesem Jahr die Internationale Buchmesse in Turin statt. Die Messe stand unter dem Thema „Jenseits von Grenzen“. Wir, die Mitglieder der Jury der Internationalen Jugendbibliothek, waren am 18. Mai zum ersten Mal dabei.

Impressions of the Bologna Book Fair 2017 by Bahar Eshragh

I am so pleasantly happy that I had the opportunity to visit the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Visiting this Book Fair is truly a great booster and has encouraged me to continue my further research in translating for children. Bologna is not only a site of transaction, but also a home of cultural exchange. A place which hosts culturally, socially, and historically diverse communities who live together in “peace” in a short period of time, from 3 – 6 of April. It is also a place that any newcomer has a chance to meet prominent figures and broaden the horizons of his / her community.

„Guten Tag, lieber Feind!“ auf dem „Arsenal Book Festival“ in Kiew

Aufgrund der aktuellen politischen Lage in der Ukraine und ihrer Auswirkung auf die Lebenswelt von Kindern ist das Goethe-Institut in Kiew auf unsere Ausstellung „Guten Tag, lieber Feind! Bilderbücher für Frieden und Menschlichkeit“ aufmerksam geworden. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Auswärtigen Amt in Kiew wurden die Ausstellungsplakate ins Ukrainische übersetzt, um die Buchauswahl und die Inhalte im Rahmen des „Arsenal Book Festivals“ präsentieren zu können. Guten Tag, lieber Feind: Grüße nach Kiew

Vom 22.04. – 26.04.2015 findet in Kiew in der Ukraine das Arsenal Book Festival statt. Zwei unserer Kolleginnen stellen dort die Internationale Jugendbibliothek vor und berichten über Workshops zu unserer Ausstellung „Guten Tag, lieber Feind“. Im Vorfeld dieser Veranstaltung wurde unsere Direktorin Frau Dr. Christiane Raabe für das ukrainische Literaturportal „Chytymo“ interviewt.

1. Wie entstand die Idee des Projekts? Wodurch wurde diese Idee verursacht?

Das Thema Bilderbücher für Frieden und gegen Krieg, Ausgrenzung, Hass und Gewalt beschäftigt unser Haus schon seit vielen Jahren. Die Internationale Jugendbibliothek ist nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg als Werk der Versöhnung und Völkerverständigung entstanden. Kinderbücher als Botschafter für Frieden, Freiheit und Weltoffenheit zu sammeln und zu vermitteln, war und ist ein wichtiger Auftrag unserer Bibliothek. In diesem Geist steht auch die Ausstellung „Guten Tag, lieber Feind! Bilderbücher für Frieden und Menschlichkeit“. Bereits 1996 stellten wir eine Auswahl von Bilderbüchern zu dem Thema für einen internationalen Kongress in Indien unter dem Thema „Peace and Tolerance“ zusammen. Das Interesse an den Büchern war so groß, dass daraus eine erste kleine Ausstellung entstand, die seither mehrfach überarbeitet und aktualisiert wurde.

Zuletzt haben wir die Ausstellung im letzten Herbst inhaltlich und gestalterisch komplett überarbeitet. Sie sollte ein Beitrag zum Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs 1914 werden, hat aber durch die weltpolitischen Entwicklungen, vor allem durch den Krieg in der Ukraine, im Irak, Syrien und Jemen eine beunruhigen Aktualität bekommen.

2 days, 4 jurors, 1003 books – The Bologna Ragazzi Award 2015

At the International Youth Library, it is one of my tasks to keep track of all the children’s and young adult books published in the English-speaking world. Therefore, the famous Frank Zappa quote, “So many books, so little time“, is my constant motto. However, never has this quote been more relevant than on my last visit to Bologna. On February 13^th and 14^th, I had the honour to join Fanuel Hanán Diaz, children’s literature expert from Venezuela, American graphic designer Dinah Fried, and Italian journalist Stefano Salis as a member of the international jury for this year’s Bologna Ragazzi Award. What a pleasure!

On with it! – Tbilisi Book Days

November in Tbilisi is as grey as it is in Munich. And so the Tbilisi Book Days, first of their kind, were a real splash of colour against the rainy, cloudy city sky: Set on the Expo Georgia space the Book Days invited visitors not only to buy books from various Georgian publishing houses; there was so much more to see, to hear, to discover!

Over a period of four days, visitors were invited to have a look at various exhibitions – among them an international picture book exhibition, placed in the middle of the central exhibition hall. There you could not only see picture books lent from the International Youth Library, but also picture books that the Book Art Center Georgia had obtained both for the Tbilisi Book Days and to start an international library in the near future. All the books were accompanied by white gloves that visitors had to put on before taking a book into their hands. – Is there a better way to emphasize the value a book has?

Another sparkling highlight: The three illustrators’ exhibitions. Apart from fine Iranian picture book art, curated by Ali Boozari, you were offered great insights into Ukrainian and Georgian art. Illustrations by the Kiev-based group Pictoric plus Lviv’s Agrafka Studio brilliantly pinpointed the rapid, exciting development that young Ukrainian illustration art has been taken within the last three years. And then there was Georgian illustration: Over 30 young illustrators – many of them being part of the Tbilisi-based group Virgam – showed their artwork and thereby made a strong statement about the large potential of illustration from Georgia. Very few of those illustrations have become part of picture books yet (check: Sulakauri publishing!), but they are all featured in a nice catalogue accompanying the exhibitions.

More colour splashes? Professional illustrators were invited to attend the three-day workshop conducted by illustrators Renate Habinger and Verena Ballhaus! And all visitors had the opportunity to hear lectures about picture book apps, stereotypes and authenticity in picture books, and the White Ravens Catalogue. Finally an international panel discussion on the current and the future Georgian children’s book market – its challenges and opportunities, impulses and directions – took place.

To cut this long story short: The Tbilisi Book Days have rolled out the red carpet for the Georgian children’s book art and market; but it is still waiting for more people to walk it.

The White Ravens – It’s time for a change!

After 30 years, it is time for a change: The White Ravens, our catalogue of international book recommendations, which used to be published just prior to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair each March, is going to appear in a new design and at a different date. Starting this autumn, we are now going to announce the selection every October at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The following March, these books are then going to be on display at our stand in Bologna.

Nach 30 Jahren ist die Zeit für eine Veränderung gekommen: Unsere internationalen Buchempfehlungen White Ravens, die bisher jedes Jahr an unserem Messestand in Bologna zu sehen waren, werden ab Herbst diesen Jahres in neuem Gewand erscheinen. Im Oktober geben wir die Auswahl auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse bekannt. Im nächsten Jahr werden die Bücher dann wie gewohnt in Bologna an unserem Messestand zu sehen sein.
